Noto a pochi, forse, il termine effetto matilda con il quale si fa riferimento alla sistematica esclusione delle donne dalla carriera scientifica.
Alla base del fenomeno, sia la sottovalutazione dei risultati scientifici conseguiti dalle donne, sia l’attribuzione dei risultati delle loro scoperte a un collega uomo.
Tra queste il monopoli, il reggiseno, la materia oscura , la fissione nucleare…
Colleghe donne escluse da premi e menzioni varie perché ritenute incapaci.
Le stereotipie sessiste mi riportano ad una recente ricerca realizzata nel Regno Unito che analizza il contenuto di oltre 1000 testi scolastici, dalla primaria alle scuole secondarie, provenienti da 34 paesi in tutto il mondo.
I risultati dimostrano che le donne sono menzionate con una frequenza pari alla metà di quella degli uomini; che sono sistematicamente sottorappresentate nei libri scolastici di tutto il mondo e raffigurate secondo ruoli tradizionalmente stereotipati.
Gli aggettivi più comuni usati per descrivere i personaggi femminili sono: “sposata”, “bella”, “anziana” e “tranquilla”. Gli uomini, invece, vengono spesso descritti come “ricchi”, “saggi” e “sicuri”.
Per quanto riguarda i verbi, quelli più comunemente associati alle donne sono: “cuocere”, “cucinare” e “cantare”. Per gli uomini: “governare”, “guidare”, “segnare” e “ordinare”.
Un altro riscontro è quello che il genere femminile è poco associato a termini che riguardano carriera e lavoro, molto di più a quelli relativi all’aspetto personale e alla casa.
Nei casi in cui vengono menzionate le attività professionali delle donne, la forma di impiego più comune è quella di “domestica”, “infermiera” e “funzionaria religiosa”. Al contrario, i lavori che più spesso compaiono accanto a parole di genere maschile sono: “fisico”, “matematico” e “venditore”.
Il Regno Unito è risultato il paese in cui vengono menzionati più equamente donne e uomini, anche se i termini maschili sono ancora più comuni.
La riflessione su questi dati è spontanea.
Poi, però, occorre la reazione che investe il legislatore, le case editrici, la scuola, le famiglie.
